Thin Skinned

Last week I had a brief photo session  with Stephen Copperthwaite who is  a masters body builder. Stephen asked if I could capture a couple of  images a few days  prior to his national  meet for Mr Natural Canada to be held in Nepean Ontario Saturday August 28th 2004, hosted by Neutron Sports.  Most of the photos in his collection were taken while on stage during competitions, so we went for a look without any distractions.

Stephen began weight lifting at a mere twelve years of age.  He enjoyed gymnastics throughout high school and once he hit his early twenties,  has never been away from the gym for longer than a three week stretch in twenty plus years. I think it shows.

If you've ever found regular workouts at the gym  a grind, think again about the grueling prep for a major body building competition.

Those  waif like runway models have nothing to whine about when it comes to what little food they consume to stave off body fat. They should try pumping iron several hours twice a day,  performing cardio 3 times daily, all on a mere 1200 calories in order to reduce body fat to next to nothing.

The few days prior to a body building meet are critical.  Super hydrating the body three days ahead, gradually reducing fluids to zero and then the day prior to competition, "fat loading" to plump up those starving muscles so that  tissue paper thin skin reveals the definition and contour of each and every bulging muscle fiber to the max.  Practice posing twice a day for at least a half and hour each time, squeezes out any extra fluid and  leaves the body drained, both figuratively and literally.

Flexing, posing and holding tensed massive muscles for  photographing  is hard work.  With  next to "zero" calories to fuel the body and keep it warm,  super tough looking body builders  are really just "thin skinned".

So the next time one of em kicks sand in your face at the beach, brush off your ice cream cone,  challenge him to a "pose down" ...  and hope that all those muscles are just for show..... lol
